(Not) a matter of honor: responsibility

It sounds so simple: citizens vote on who should govern Germany (or co-govern). Politicians follow the mandate. What sounds simple is currently proving difficult. There are too many different opinions, too many interest groups, too many issues: immigration, climate change, education policy, internal security, and digitalization. The negotiations are a tough battle with ups and downs. First, the CSU and CDU had to reach an agreement. Then the Jamaica coalition negotiations fell apart. Now the CDU/CSU and SPD are cautiously venturing to the negotiating table like an ex-couple.

An interesting situation of tension

What makes the negotiations so difficult? On closer inspection, it becomes clear that it is not just the different issues. All parties want to push through their positions from the election campaign. We citizens want a strong government.Ifa party backs down in the public eye, it is seen as a loser and therefore weak. So, "don't lose face." If parties do not subordinate themselves to the cause, they are accused of vanity by the people. And rightly so. Tension on all sides. A sandwich position for everyone. A classic principle that each of us knows from our own lives. But what now?

Understanding without having to agree

In such discussions, intellectual and emotional understanding are key. And this applies on various levels. Each of the participants must have a clear view of personal interests, party interests, and the interests of the people. Without judging them. Without reproach. Without emotional distortion and ideological accusations. In the end, "everyonemustcome out a winner." This is difficult, very difficult, for mediocre personalities. That is why such negotiations take so much time.

It's not just about rational intentions. It's also about the "why" in people's hearts. The real reason behind the arguments that are often put forward. Once this is clear, the path to agreement becomes visible. If not, the "unrecognized emotions"will continue to obscure the view. So, at its core, it's about understanding. Deep understanding. And keeping a clear view of what connects and what divides us. This won't make the divisions disappear. But emotionally, the connections will be brought out more strongly.

responsibility

The struggle for results also sheds interesting light on the issue responsibility. Of course, all those involved proclaim that they responsibility their responsibility . That they want to take responsibility the country. That they want to fulfill the government's mandate. Ego, power, and self-interest are by no means drivers or obstacles. Such insinuations are countered with the responsibility one has toward one's own party, the party, and the election program.

Of course, responsible action is always determined by the environment and the group. Was Christian Lindner's decision to break off negotiations a matter of vanity or courage? Responsible or selfish? Did the SPD take too long to agree to cooperate with the CDU and CSU? Or has it become soft? Perspective makes all the difference.

You just have to want it

One thing is also clear: politicians, leader media professionals are no better informed than the average citizen. This may come as a surprise. But the Responsibility Index has proven that the quality of responsibility among managers hardly differs from that of non-managers. Current events confirm this. But here's the good news: anyone can responsibility their ability to responsibility . Anyone can learn to understand the issue in depth. All it takes is the will to do so.

Where this succeeds, democracy can also succeed. And results can improve. As easy as this insight is, its implementation is difficult. Because it requires greatness from all sides. And unfortunately, that is not as often available as it is needed. So, let's hope for the best in 2018. And let's be prepared for the worst.

Yours, Boris Grundl
