Last week , we explained the background to the creation of the Responsibility Index and responsibility the general understanding of responsibility . In today's blog post, we would like to give you an insight into the survey method used in the study.

The representative results of the Responsibility Index are calculated automatically from the data entered by participants in the online questionnaire. Around 1,000 respondents answer a number of questions about their age, gender, background, and life situation. They then sort 18 terms and statements twice according to their own feelings. This survey and calculation method is based on the scientific research of Professor Robert S. Hartman, who created the Hartman Value Profile (HVP) and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1973. The HVP has been used millions of times worldwide and is therefore extensively scientifically validated. Boris Grundl and Dr. Ulrich Vogel have further developed the profile for the Responsibility Index so that individual views on the topic responsibility can also be presented responsibility .

Value system and stage of life – ability and willingness

The complex ranking model accurately reflects a person's view of the world and themselves. It also takes into account their current stage of life. It provides insight into both a person's fundamental value system and their current prevailing attitudes. In science, the value system is considered the most consistent guide to action. This can be measured in terms of values – i.e., through evaluation and not through self-reporting! This rules out manipulation and psychological effects such as social desirability or self-presentation.

Whereas many conventional methods measure individual talents or areas of motivation, profilingvalues combines the two factors of "ability" and "motivation." This makes it possible to map a person's inclinations, skills, interests, and potential as clearly as possible.

All central personality traits include these two aspects: "ability" – the capacity to do something – and "will" – the current focus of attention on it. Everyone has talents and potential that can be ignored, inhibited, or suppressed, but also focused on and challenged. The measurement is not only intended to show how someone is fundamentally wired. Equally important is the situation they are currently in, or how their current environment affects them. It is this combination that gives the process its particular depth of focus, allowing very clear statements to be made.

Human, factual, and principled dimensions

Value orientation can be divided into human, material, and principled values. (Read more about this in Dr. Ulrich Vogel's blog post ). Therefore, the topic responsibility is also measured responsibility three different dimensions: The human dimension of responsibility encompasses everything that people responsibility and perceive in relation to responsibility (basic question: Who is responsibility?). The factual responsibility dimension encompasses everything that people responsibility , observe, and do in relation to responsibility (basic question: What is the subject of responsibility?). The principled responsibility dimension encompasses everything that people responsibility and evaluate in relation to responsibility (basic question: What is responsibility for?).

The skin acts as a membrane

At the same time, the results target two differentvalue spaces: responsibility society (external/the outside) and personal responsibility (internal/the self). The external value space refers to the perceived world on the topic responsibility. The internal value space refers to a person's internal processes on the topic responsibility. You can think of your own skin as the dividing line here. Our two diagnostic tools – Focus responsibility for measuring general responsibility the Leadership Excellence Report for measuring your own leadership qualities – are also based on this survey method.

We will inform you shortly about the results of the second survey on the topic responsibility. If you would like to explore the topic in advance, why not take the free self-test at www.verantwortungsindex.de. Within a few minutes, you will receive your results and can compare them with the German average.
