In times of uncertainty, having the right mental attitude is mental attitude important. In his blog, Boris Grundl gives you exclusive tips on how you can gain mental strength in difficult times by applying the three phases of a crisis.

Developing mental strength is extremely important, especially in times of uncertainty such as those we are currently experiencing. How you personally develop mental strength can be determined by answering the following two questions: How can I get through a crisis as unscathed as possible? And: How can this crisis become an opportunity for me with my mental attitude? The answers come from a deeper understanding of what is happening right now.

Train mental strength with the three phases of crisis

You can train your mental strength with the help of the three phases of a crisis. Every crisis goes through three phases: recognition, acknowledgment, and transformation. When we recognize something, we initially refuse to accept reality, thinking, "That can't be true..." We repress it and bury our heads in the sand. When that is no longer possible, we look for someone to blame—whether it is a person or a circumstance is irrelevant. Someone or something must be responsible for the fact that we have to deal with this situation. We ask ourselves questions such as "Why didn't he or she do this earlier...," which do not help us and ultimately push the issue away from us. We distance ourselves from the problem because we are mentally weak. The second phase, acknowledgment, brings about a turning point—both internally and externally. Although hesitant, we want to accept the circumstances. What follows is a feeling of guilt or shame: "If only I had..." After that, we learn to deal with the situation better. This is followed by a state of heaviness and a sense of duty. "Now I'll just make the best of it..." – close your eyes and get through it. Our energy level is moderate. Our creativity is meager.

With transformation begins the phase in which we train our mental strength. We have now fully accepted the situation emotionally and made it our own. We no longer have to face it, we want to. Our mantra is: "If I have to, then I want to!" Now we accept what the crisis is doing to us. Our self is broken down and then put back together again. This makes it stronger and our mental attitude : as individuals, as a family, as a company, or as a society. A good historical example is the post-war generation. Our energy levels are high. We are bursting with ideas and creativity. We act powerfully and purposefully, even though we are still suffering inside. We endure this because we are looking for the lesson in the crisis. Once we learn the lesson, a crisis becomes an opportunity. Developing mental strength means proving to ourselves again and again that we are ultimately stronger than any problem!

Right now, we are realizing very seriously what it is like when things we take for granted are taken away. When we are thrown back on ourselves. On our own weakness, on our own insecurity. The illusion of self-sufficiency is dissolving. We cannot cope on our own. It would be nice if, as a result, we mental attitude a stronger mental attitude —a deeper awareness of our lives and those of others.

It is possible to remain in the states described for seconds, minutes, days, years, or your entire life. That is why it is important to get through them as quickly as possible. In my opinion, there are no shortcuts. It is now important that as many people as possible fully accept the coronavirus crisis mentally: in their relationships and families as well as at work, in order to provide mental support to those who are not yet able to do so. That is exactly what leadership is! You and everyone else can do that now. All the actions that result from this will be important. We can all make a difference. Let's get to work.
